SINEBRYCHOFF – TOWARDS REGENERATIVE CHRISTMAS BEER AND BEYOND

Sinebrychoff, Finland’s leading brewing company, felt that personnel training and the regenerative cultivation of malting barley were worthy of a Baltic Sea Commitment.
First carbon-farmed beer on the market
Since 2015, Sinebrychoff has been working with BSAG to harness its own expertise in efforts to improve the condition of the Baltic Sea.
The goal of producing a carbon-farmed Christmas beer was achieved in 2021, when Sinebrychoff’s Baltic Sea Commitment brought Finland’s first carbon-farmed beer to the market: 2021 KOFF Christmas Beer. The malting barley for the Christmas beer is cultivated using the principles of regenerative farming, which represents a new stage in Sinebrychoff’s long-term plans to promote sustainability in the primary production of malting barley. In 2023, the malting barley for the Christmas beer originates from Tomppila farm in Raussila, Kouvola.
In the longer term, Sinebrychoff aims to remain a pioneer of regenerative agriculture in the brewing industry.
Promoting regenerative agriculture
All personnel must be made aware of new objectives and operating methods. Which is why Sinebrychoff’s Baltic Sea Commitment focuses on promoting Carlsberg’s 2022 published Together Towards Zero and Beyond (TTZAB) sustainability goal. Sinebrychoff forms a dedicated team of experts focused on regenerative agriculture to drive the TTZAB agenda forward within the company.
Sinebrychoff continues to produce Christmas beer made from regeneratively cultivated malting barley during the commitment period and explores extending the same concept to other products.
Farmer Collaboration
Sinebrychoff, together with BSAG, will encourage and train farmers to switch to regenerative agriculture.
Sinebrychoff will work to identify how best to use surplus mash from beer production in line with the principles of regenerative agriculture and circular economy.
Sustainable water use and management
Sinebrychoff aims to improve the water efficiency of beverage production from the current 2.1 litres to 2 litres per litre of beverage produced.
COLLABORATION OBJECTIVES
Formation of TTZAB expert team to promote regenerative agriculture inside the organization. Improving water efficiency in Sinebrychoff’s beverage production.
Water consumption: 70,000 cubic metres less than in 2019.
The brewery’s carbon footprint is a round zero, and the first carbon-farmed KOFF Christmas beer goes on the market.
First Baltic Sea-friendly KOFF Christmas Beer reaches the market.
Sinebrychoff became a carbon-neutral brewery in 2021. We have long-term ambitious science-based goals for energy and water efficiency, as well as packaging and value chain carbon dioxide emissions, to reduce the negative environmental impact. Regeneratively cultivated malting barley is equally climate work.
