The concentrations of nutrients important for plant growth in the soil have been routinely monitored for decades. Reported observations of a decrease in microelement concentrations in crops have raised questions about the fertility of the land and the quality of food.
This study examined the microelement concentrations of Finnish agricultural lands between 1974 and 2018, as well as the microelement concentrations of oat and barley grains between 1988 and 2018. No major deficiencies were detected in the soil and grain samples. Although microelement concentrations are at a satisfactory or good level across the country, deficiencies can occur locally.
